Red mullet
Red mullet's head is more vertical to the body than as is of surmullet. It has spindly body, thickest by its head, which tapers toward tail. It
has two dorsal fins, two side and one with abdominal gills to tail. Its tail is brown in color and of regular shape and consists of two equally
large fins. Caudal notch is smaller than of surmullet. The red mullet has a reddish back with longitudinal reddish stripe and is dotted with
red spots over the hips and white belly. The chin has two elongated gropes with which it digs in the sand looking for food. It can grow up
to 0.5 kg and 30 cm in length.
It resides on muddy and sandy bottoms far away from the coast even at depths of 300 meters. It uses feelers to dig worms, crabs and
small fish buried deeper in the mud or sand. In the winter mullets like to go deep and in summer they come out to the shallows. They
move in flocks.
Trlja blatarica
a čine ga dvije podjednako velike peraje. Repni urez je manjinego kod kamenjarke. Trlja blatarica ima crvenkasta leđa sa uzdužnom
isprekidanom crvenkastom prugom i crvenim pjegicama preko bokova te sedefasto bijeli trbuh. Na podbratku ima dva duguljasta pipka
kojima kopa po pijesku tražeći hranu. Može narasti do 0.5 kg težine i 30 cm dužine.
Život provodi uz muljevita i muljevito pjeskovita dna daleko od obale i na dubini do 300 m. Pomoću pipaka kopajući pronalazi crviće,
račiće i manje ribe zakopane dublje u mulj ili pijesku. Zimi se blatarice drže dubine zbog hladnoće a ljeti zalaze u plićak. Kreću se u
jatima.
